Many small business owners, churches, and nonprofit leaders know they should be using social media, but many have a difficult time trying to figure out just exactly how to make it work. As a digital marketing consultant in Rochester, NY, I hear this often.
The good news is you don’t need to be a marketing expert to start building meaningful connections online. Whether you’re looking to attract new clients, hoping to engage your congregation, or wanting to share your mission, these six tips will help you use social media with more purpose and confidence.
Start with One Platform
It’s tempting to want to be everywhere, but you don’t need to be on every platform to be effective. Choose one social media platform where your audience is already active; for instance, Instagram may be a great place for wellness practitioners and Facebook may be great for churches and nonprofits. Whichever option you choose, engage and post consistently.
Show Your Face (or Space!)
People connect with people, especially when it’s authentic. Share a photo of yourself, your team, or your workspace. Introduce yourself. Tell your story. Why you do what you do? These kinds of posts build trust and remind your audience that there’s a real person behind the profile.
Educate or Inspire with Value-Driven Posts
Give your followers something they can use right away. A quick wellness tip, an encouraging quote, a behind-the-scenes look at your day, or answers to common questions can all offer value. Don’t overthink it. Look at it as a conversation. Ask yourself, “Would this help or inspire someone today?”
Use Simple Graphics or Video
Visuals always help content stand out. Use a free tool like Canva to create branded graphics, or record a short video with your phone. Something as simple as a 30-second clip sharing a helpful tip or welcoming people to your page (or business location) can go a long way in building engagement.
Be Consistent, Not Perfect
Don’t feel you need to post every day to see results. Choose a manageable schedule, like two or three times per week, and stick with it. Being consistent builds familiarity and trust, even if your content isn’t perfect. Again, think of it as a conversation.
Engage With Your Audience
Speaking of which, creating posts is just one part of social media. Reply to comments, like and share relevant content, and leave thoughtful replies on other pages. This builds community and helps more people discover your mission or services.
